Wastewater flows through the main drain into the septic tank. Inside the tank, heavier solids settle to the bottom while oils and grease rise to the top. The remaining wastewater flows from the tank into the drainage area, where it is naturally filtered through the soil.

Over time, solids accumulate in the tank and need to be pumped out. Routine septic tank cleaning and maintenance can help prevent backups, system problems and potentially expensive repairs.
